Sources & Reference

First below are 10 sources numbered on the Home and Research pages.

Second is the US govt's NIH website and position on Omega-3s.

Next is an explanation of the 3:1 Safe Zone origination.

That's followed by a brief discussion about a world-renowned expert and common misinformation.

Lastly is a chronological list of studies and stories, descending from current year to 1992 at the bottom.

NIH ODS, "Omega-3 Fatty Acids Fact Sheet for Health Professionals" ("Updated: August 22, 2025"): https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Omega3FattyAcids-HealthProfessional/

This document is placed here, again, because it has so much reference material, and it's also the government's official position on Omega fatty acid data. In 2004, the US Govt.'s FDA (Food & Drug Admin.) approved a qualified health claim for conventional foods and dietary supplements that contain EPA and DHA, which states (and is referenced on this NIH site), "Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease." Of course, 2004 was a long time ago, with a huge number of studies since then finding much more corroborating and urgent conclusions, as pointed out here. But the 2004 statement is still active on the site.

Also note that the 2025 new pregnancy recommendation, from the NIH ODS' "Dietary Supplements and Life Stages: Pregnancy" page, https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Pregnancy-HealthProfessional/, under "Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Seafood," was updated in April 2025 to say: "Research indicates that long-chain omega-3s reduce the risk of preterm birth, so experts recommend that all women of childbearing age consume at least 250 mg/day of DHA plus EPA from diet or supplements, and an additional 100 to 200 mg/day of DHA during pregnancy. Most women who are pregnant do not meet these recommendations."

WHERE DOES THE OMEGA-6:OMEGA-3 RATIO OF 3:1 "SAFE ZONE" ORIGINATE?

If you've read this far, then you're serious about doing your research, and the elephant on the table is this topic.

Anyone on the planet can do a search on Google or your AI/search engine of choice for "what should omega-6:3 ratio be," and universally the response will be similar to Google's, which the vast majority of the PubMed literature supports: "The ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids for health is generally considered to be between 1:1 and 4:1. Modern Western diets often fall far outside this range, with ratios often exceeding 15:1 or 20:1, which is linked to increased inflammation." And Zinzino's recommended "Safe Zone" inside a 3:1 ratio is a result of the research., which you can see from reading many of the links here.

That same search produced: "People also ask, 'What is the ideal ratio of omega-6 to 3?'" with the answer, "This ratio (between 2:1 and 1:1) should be the target for human nutrition. In Western diets, the omega-6/omega-3 ratio has increased to between 10:1 and 20:1." Well, our massive database says it's much worse than that ...

ACTUAL ANALYZED BLOOD DATA SAYS:

As stated out on this site's home page, our company has tested over 60,000 people in the USA (and approximately 1.7 MILLION people worldwide), and the average USA omega-6/omega-3 ratio from those blood tests is over 22:1. It's logical to conclude that the majority of those 60,000 people tested are much more concerned about their health and nutrition than the general population, so the expectation from eventually testing millions of people in the USA is the average ratio across the entire population is much higher than 22:1, which is considered a serious health crisis by most subject experts. :(

That led world-recognized lipid expert Dr. Artemis P. Simopoulos, on Mar 19, 2025, to put out a press release headlined, "Experts Sound Alarm on Dangerous Omega-6 and Omega-3 Imbalance in U.S. Food Supply," four years after many reputable nutrition industry research publications ran the headline, "A Low Omega-3 Index Is Just as Strong a Predictor of Early Death as Smoking" - that was the Jun 24, 2021, Neuroscience News headline, that also ran the same week by Nutritional Outlook and NutraIngredients.com. All of those linked headlines are below, in chronological order, and quickly reached with an easy "Ctrl-F" (or the "find" function) on your device.

DR. ARTEMIS SIMOPOULOS, M.D.

If you're not familiar with Dr. Simopoulos, you should know that her credentials include: Founding Member in 1991 of the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids, Chair of the Nutrition Coordinating Committee of the National Institute of Health for 9 years, graduate of Boston Univ. School of Medicine, publisher of over 200 scientific papers (most of which you can read here: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Artemis-Simopoulos), and author of the 1990 book, "The Omega Diet: The Lifesaving Nutritional Program." You'll see several of her documents listed below.

THE USUAL MISINFORMATION FROM THE CONFLICTED CROWD

Also displayed in that Google search above is the expected confusion from those in the SICKcare industry, who make their money by prescribing drugs instead of by getting people healthy. You'll probably see a source from Harvard Health in 2019 claiming, "No need to avoid healthy omega-6 fats" and "The critics argue that we should cut back on our intake of omega-6 fats to improve the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6s. Hogwash, says the American Heart Association (AHA)." If you click the link provided there, the next line in the linked site says, "Omega-6 fats from vegetable oils — like their cousins, the omega-3 fats from fish — are good for the heart." The Harvard Health publication then goes on to engage in several paragraphs of misdirection, vague commentary, and unhelpful and complicated theories about fats, before stating in the NINTH paragraph, "Most Americans eat more omega-6 fats than omega-3 fats, on average about 10 times more. [No, ALL the data says 15 to 30 times more, and we regularly see people's test results at 40 to 50 times more.] A low intake of omega-3 fats is not good for cardiovascular health, so bringing the two into better balance is a good idea. But don't do this by cutting back on healthy omega-6 fats. Instead, add some extra omega-3s." And that's the end of their newsletter guidance, which seems to be equivalent to irresponsible malpractice if the general public attempts to follow that advice. The conflict of interest issue from the "Big Pharma" crowd is similar to the lack of concern decades ago about cigarette smoking that took forever to coagulate into consensus - and with the Omega Ratio, we have comparable feet-dragging by many financially-compromised interests.

NOW, ON TO THE RESEARCH!

Below is a comprehensive list of clinical studies and news stories on Omega-3, listed chronologically with the most recent at the top, going all the way back to 1992.
